Why 301?

301 Organics was founded on the understanding that regeneration follows a pattern.  A pattern that begins with people, moves through #soil, and results in new life. The number #301 captures that pattern both symbolically and scientifically.

The 3 represents community: the people who gather after disruption....the neighbors who show up, the workers who learn new skills, and the partners who collaborate to restore ecological function. It reflects communication, creativity, and collective action which is the foundation of every project we take on.

The 0 is the soil cycle itself: the #closedloop, the #compost pile, the center of transformation. Zero is the reminder that nothing in nature is wasted when we understand how ecosystems work. It is the living core of our mission.

The 1 represents new beginnings: the first sprout after a fire, the first hillside stabilized with living roots, the first worker empowered with soil‑stewardship skills. It is the spark of regeneration that follows community effort and #biological restoration.

But 301 also carries a deeper, technical meaning rooted in the science of #composting.

In compost biology, 30:1 is the ideal carbon‑to‑nitrogen ratio. That is, 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen, the recipe that allows microbes to thrive, break down organic matter, and build stable humus. When tended intentionally, turned once a week (1), and allowed to reach temperatures above 130°F for at least 3 days, this mixture transforms into finished compost in about 3 months. See the pattern? Nature is more than wonderful, it's ecstatically intriguing!

This is not just a formula. It is a metaphor for our work.

• Carbon represents the community’s organic material.....ts stories, its losses, its resources, its resilience.

• Nitrogen represents the spark of action.....the training, the science, the transformation, the hands‑on work that accelerates transformation. Nitrogen exists in our atmosphere in abundance and is transformed to feed plants through microbial interaction and nutrient cycling.

• Heat represents the energy of people coming together with purpose and of the sun that plants need to grow.

• Three months represents the truth that regeneration takes time, understanding, and care.

Just as compost becomes soil through the right balance of ingredients and steady tending, communities regenerate when given the right support, knowledge, and conditions to heal.

301 Organics exists to restore #soilhealth in post‑fire landscapes, to train a local workforce in regenerative land care, and to return organic matter to the land instead of landfills. We bridge science and community, urgency and stewardship, ecological function and human resilience.
